Dr.Krishnamurthy Jayanna is the founder and director of the Center for Integrative Health and Wellbeing. Along with others, he shapes the vision and strategies, advocates for Center’s issues and helps set the overall direction of the Center.
Krishnamurthy is a physician, a public health specialist and a researcher, active in the space of public and global health for over two decades. His focus has been on designing and scaling up innovations and programs through application of program science approaches, implementation research methods and use of technology. His experience spans across the areas of Maternal, Neonatal and Child health (MNCH), HIV, Non communicable diseases (NCD) with a particular emphasis on strengthening primary health care in the low and middle income countries. In the recent past, he has expanded his research focus on complementary medicine and integrative health, and its implications for public health and community wellbeing.
Currently he works as Senior Technical Advisor, Community Health and Global Health at Institute for Global Public Health, University of Manitoba, Canada supporting large scale projects in India and Africa. He supports MPH (Masters in Public Health) program that he designed four years ago, at Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences as a Visiting Professor and PhD supervisor. At Ramaiah university, in the past, he has held academic positions as Dean of Faculty of Life and Allied Health Sciences, and Dean of Office of Research and Innovation. Currently he is also the India site coordinator for a Global Health Training Program, that trains PhD and postdoctoral fellows from across four countries, India, Canada, Kenya and Columbia. He serves as advisor (Hon) on several institutions of national and global repute - India Health Action Trust, Karnataka Health Promotion Trust and Community Empowerment Lab; he is also a part of academic and research councils of Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR), Bangalore.
Krishnamurthy serves as a task force member, expert member and a steering committee member on a number of National Health Research Priority projects related to Maternal and Child Health, Mental Health, Non-communicable diseases, etc at Indian Council Medical Research, Govt of India. He is a GBD (Global Burden of Disease) collaborator for MNCH and NCDs. In the past, he was part of the global health team of University of Manitoba and was involved in their projects across India, Africa and Caribbean. He also held a part-time faculty position with the department of Community Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, Canada and Division of Epidemiology, St John’s Research Institute, Bangalore, India.
Krishnamurthy is a volunteer at Heartfulness Institute, a meditation trainer and practitioner over 25 years. He serves as the Chair of the Heartfulness Research Council, and facilitates scientific exploration of impact of meditation and other contemplative practices on health & wellbeing; human consciousness and development. He is an advocate of yoga and natural living. His keen interest in scientific exploration of integrating modern medicine with Meditation, Yoga and Ayurveda, led him to establish the ‘Center for Integrative Health and Wellbeing (CIHW)’as its founding Director few years ago. At CIHW, he and his team conduct research to curate programs and interventions, provide training and support to people in embracing an ‘Integrative Lifestyle for Holistic Being’. He has published a book to inspire and support people in adopting an integrative health and wellbeing lifestyle (https://www.cihw.in/book-release) and also delivered a number of lectures including a TEDX talk.
He has published over 100 publications that includes journals, book chapters, books, white papers and research reports (google scholar); participated as key note speaker and an expert panellist in over 50 conferences and workshops of national and international repute. He has been a recipient of Karnataka Association of Community Health (KACH) young scientist award (2010); National level Impact award and Best project award in wellness categories; and scholarships from NIH, USA and WHO, Geneva (2007). Recently he was awarded the prestigious Achanta Lakshmipathi oration award for outstanding contributions in the space of maternal and child health by National Academy of Medical Sciences (2022), and Community Health champion award (2023) by Karnataka Association of Community Health.
He completed M.B.B.S from JSSMC, Mysore university and MD in Community Medicine from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute; received training in advanced research methods at W.H.O, Geneva and also holds a post-doctoral research fellowship from Canada.
